Understanding the appeal process

Individuals who receive a decision from one of the Industry Councils have the right to appeal the decision to the Insurance Councils Appeal Board of Alberta.

Revised Appeal Guideline now available

To support a better understanding of the appeals process, the Alberta Insurance Council (AIC) has published a revised Guideline for Appealing an Industry Council Decision.

The guideline provides an overview of the appeal process, including how to submit a Notice of Appeal, key deadlines, hearing procedures, and the roles of parties involved in the appeal process. It also outlines what appellants can expect throughout the process and highlights important information to consider before filing an appeal.

Making regulatory processes easier to understand is an important part of supporting fairness, transparency, and informed decision-making. By providing clear procedural information in a single resource, the guideline helps individuals better understand their rights, responsibilities, and the steps involved in pursuing an appeal.

The guideline is intended to provide procedural information only and does not replace independent legal advice. The AIC strongly advises that appellants obtain independent legal advice when appealing a Council Decision.

The appeal process is governed by the Insurance Act and its Regulations. Individuals considering an appeal are encouraged to review the guideline to better understand the process and requirements.
