New accreditation frameworks strengthen Continuing Education standards
The AIC’s new accreditation frameworks support consistent and high-quality CE for insurance professionals in Alberta.
The new frameworks outline the standards and requirements for two types of accreditation: single course accreditation and self-accredited course provider accreditation.
Together they help ensure that Continuing Education (CE) courses are relevant to the insurance industry, support professional development, and uphold academic integrity.
The role of Continuing Education
Continuing Education helps insurance professionals maintain and enhance the knowledge, skills, and expertise required to meet their professional responsibilities. The new frameworks set clear expectations for course content, instructor qualifications, and course provider responsibilities.
Two accreditation pathways
Single course accreditation
Course providers must submit applications for review by the AIC. Courses are assessed to ensure they meet educational quality standards, related directly to the insurance industry, and align with the appropriate class of insurance.
Self-accredited course providers
Eligible organizations may apply to become self-accredited. Once approved by the AIC, the organization can determine whether their courses meet the AIC’s accreditation requirements without applying for accreditation for each course.
AIC’s role in accreditation
As Alberta’s insurance regulator, the AIC is responsible for setting accreditation expectations, reviewing applications, issuing accreditation decisions, and monitoring compliance. The AIC may request additional information when needed, approve or reject applications, and revoke or cancel accreditation where requirements are no longer being met.
Supporting consistency
These frameworks provide greater clarity for course providers and help support a consistent approach to Continuing Education. By strengthening accreditation standards, the AIC continues to support professionalism, regulatory compliance, and public confidence.
