AIC shares takeaways from Industry Council disciplinary decisions in IBAA’s magazine

The Alberta Insurance Council (AIC) is committed to providing resources that support brokers in maintaining high professional standards while serving Albertans. One way we do this is by sharing recent Industry Council disciplinary decisions. These decisions are posted on our website to promote transparency, but they also serve a broader purpose in that they are a valuable source of practical education for licensees.

In the latest issue of the Insurance Brokers Association of Alberta’s Alberta Broker magazine, the AIC contributed an article titled “Learnings from recent Industry Council disciplinary decisions.” The article explores five themes that have emerged in recent Council decisions. Each theme highlights where legislative requirements or professional standards were not met and, most importantly, what lessons can be drawn from those situations.

Why does this matter to brokers? Council disciplinary decisions provide timely reminders of the standards that must be applied across the profession and concrete examples of disciplinary actions when non-compliance occurs. By reflecting on these cases, brokers can stay ahead of potential issues and maintain compliance within their own practices.

Learning from disciplinary decisions also contributes to a stronger industry. It ensures that licensees are aware of the Insurance Act and its regulations, and that they understand how those requirements apply in everyday business decisions. Well-informed professionals are better equipped to serve consumers, avoid compliance breaches, and maintain the reputation of the industry.
