Understand your Code of Conduct: A quick guide for license holders

When purchasing insurance, Albertans trust in the expertise and advice of their licensed insurance professionals. This trust is built on the foundation of integrity, competence, and good faith.

The three industry councils—the General Insurance Council, the Insurance Adjusters’ Council, and the Life Insurance Council—each established a Code of Conduct that outlines the minimum standard of conduct expected of agents, brokers, and independent adjusters when dealing with Albertans that rely on their services. License holders are expected to understand and apply the principles outlined in their respective Code of Conduct.

What is a Code of Conduct?

A Code of Conduct is a set of guidelines that outlines the expected behaviour and ethical standards for licensed professionals. In the insurance industry, these codes are designed to ensure that agents, brokers, and independent adjusters act with integrity, trustworthiness, competence, and good faith. They provide a benchmark for professional conduct and help maintain public confidence in the industry.

What is in the Code of Conduct?

Each code outlines the standards expected when dealing with clients, insurers, claimants, the public, and other stakeholders. Each Councils’ code is specific to the license class and contains:

  • Principles, requirements, and how they can be applied
  • Guidelines for conducting yourself by the principles
  • Examples of misconduct.
