The AIC 2024 Annual Report is now available

Strengthening public protection and regulatory excellence

The Alberta Insurance Council (AIC) is pleased to share its 2024 Annual Report, offering a closer look at how we protect insurance consumers, modernize our operations, and set a strong foundation for the future. This past year marked major progress in key areas of regulation, governance, industry collaboration, and public protection. The Annual Report shares how each of these achievements supports the AIC’s mandate to protect Alberta insurance consumers by overseeing the licensing of insurance agents, brokers, and independent adjusters.

2024 at a glance: [The AIC] issued 80,851 licenses by verifying applicants have the requirements needed to be a licensed insurance professional.

Leading collaboration

Throughout 2024, the AIC took an increasingly active role in national conversations about the future of insurance regulation. Our staff contributed to key working groups within the Canadian Insurance Services Regulatory Organizations (CISRO), sitting on committee and working groups to discuss topics like cybersecurity, consumer awareness, segregated funds oversight, and strategic planning.

We also hosted the 2024 Compliance Summit, where regulators and industry experts from across Canada came together to share best practices and discuss emerging risks. Sessions explored multi-level marketing oversight, regulatory court cases, and risk-based approaches to compliance.

By strengthening relationships with provincial regulators and industry associations, the AIC is sharing and learning from best practices that not only protect Albertans but also raise standards across Canada.

2024 at a glance: [The AIC] supported six current and future insurance professionals through AIC scholarships and grants; this includes two post-secondary students and four students pursuing their CIP, ACIP, or FCIP designation.

Raising the bar on professional standards

A key component of AIC’s work is ensuring that insurance professionals are qualified, competent, and follow legislative requirements. In 2024, we issued over 80,000 licenses, administered nearly 19,000 licensing exams, and supported future leaders through scholarships and grants. In addition, the AIC strengthened compliance with Errors and Omissions (E&O) insurance requirements through audits, bulletins, webinars, and targeted industry engagement.

Modernizing for a stronger future

Keeping pace with a changing industry means ensuring that our regulatory processes are modern, secure, and efficient. In 2024, the AIC launched a new public website designed with faster navigation and easier access to licensing and regulatory information for all stakeholders. We also continued to prepare for the 2025 launch of a new Customer Relationship Management (CRM) system, which will streamline how license holders interact with the AIC and strengthen our internal operations.

When extreme weather events struck Alberta in the summer of 2024, the AIC responded by implementing an expedited licensing process for non-resident adjusters, allowing them to quickly assist Albertans with claims processing. Our approach was nationally recognized as a “new standard” for licensing.

Expanding consumer outreach

In 2024, the AIC expanded its public outreach initiatives, helping consumers recognize fraud risks and understand how to verify that their insurance professional is properly licensed. During Fraud Prevention Month in March, we launched an educational campaign across social media, sharing practical tips to help Albertans spot common scams and take action to protect themselves. Building on this momentum, we launched the AIC’s first-ever Consumer Awareness Campaign in the fall, highlighting how we protect the public every day.

2024 at a glance: [The AIC] conducted 894 investigations and inquiries across the Industry Councils to ensure Alberta consumers were protected against misconduct and unlicensed activity.
2024 at a glance: [The AIC] worked with 87 corporations to bring them into compliance with E&O requirements.

Why this work matters

The 2024 Annual Report reflects not only a year of milestones, but the AIC’s ongoing commitment to its mandate. Every exam administered, every license issued, every complaint investigated, and every stakeholder collaboration strengthens public protection for Alberta consumers.
