National Insurance Awareness Day is June 28

June 28 is National Insurance Awareness Day.

A national reminder to check your coverage

Understanding your insurance coverage is an important step towards being protected.

That’s the message behind National Insurance Awareness Day (NIAD), an initiative developed by the Canadian Insurance Services Regulatory Organizations (CISRO). Observed annually on June 28, NIAD is an opportunity for insurance consumers and professionals across Canada to reflect on the role insurance plays in everyday life and to make sure coverage still aligns with current needs.

As both a member of CISRO and a member of CISRO’s “Consumer Awareness Working Group,” the Alberta Insurance Council works alongside insurance regulators across Canada to develop and foster accessible, consumer-friendly education and awareness. This includes participating in national conversations and sharing tools that help consumers ask the right questions and get the right coverage.

Is your insurance still a good fit for your life?

Big moments like buying a home or welcoming a new family member require updates to your coverage. But even smaller shifts—like home renovations, a growing collection of valuables, or a change in how you use your vehicle—can affect what’s covered and what isn’t.

Reviewing your policy regularly helps ensure you’re not caught off guard if something unexpected happens. You might learn that you’re paying to insure things you no longer own or that you’re not covered as fully as you thought. Connecting with a licensed insurance professional is the best way to talk through what’s changed and whether your current policy still meets your needs.

Not sure how to start the conversation? CISRO’s “Home Insurance Coverage Tips” is a free resource that outlines practical questions to ask your broker or agent. It also explains how to make informed decisions about your insurance coverage, such as knowing the difference between rebuild value and market value—two very different measures that can influence claims outcomes.

A chance for licensees to strengthen client relationships

For brokers and agents, NIAD is an opportunity to proactively engage clients in meaningful policy discussions. These conversations build trust and reinforce the important role licensed insurance professionals play in reducing risk and protecting what’s most important for consumers.

Licensees are encouraged to explore CISRO’s consumer resource centre which includes shareable graphics, conversation starters, and insurance literacy tools that support public education. These resources can also help reiterate key topics like fraud prevention and natural disaster readiness.

By incorporating these tools into your own outreach and client conversations, you’re helping create an informed, resilient consumer base.

Nation-wide collaboration

By working together with partners in CISRO, the AIC is able to share valuable information that supports consumer awareness in every province and territory. This collaboration reflects our commitment to upholding regulatory standards while helping Albertans make informed decisions about the insurance professionals and products they engage with.

If you haven’t reviewed your policy lately, or if you’re wondering whether your coverage still meets your needs, National Insurance Awareness Day is a great time to start the conversation.
