Get ready for 2026 license renewals

What’s new for this year and what you should complete before May 1, 2026.

As the Alberta Insurance Council’s (AIC) annual license renewal period approaches, the AIC is reminding all insurance agents, brokers, and independent adjusters of the key dates and requirements for renewing their licenses.

The 2026 renewal period begins on May 1, 2026. All licenses issued before this date must be renewed by June 30, 2026. If you do not renew your license by June 30, you will no longer be authorized to conduct insurance business in Alberta.

What’s new for the 2026 renewal season

There are new questions included in the 2026 renewal applications. These questions must be reviewed and answered carefully.

Licensees are responsible for the accuracy and completeness of their renewal applications. Even if someone assists with administrative tasks, you are expected to review and complete your own application before submitting it.

Helpful reminders before you renew

Make sure you hold the right licenses

Several new Restricted Certificates of Authority were introduced in 2025. Please read AIC’s IB-2024-01 and IB-2025-01 for more information. Before renewing, confirm that you are applying for, or renewing all licenses required to conduct your insurance business in Alberta.

Act early if you are changing a Designated Representative

If there are any changes to a Designated Representative, these should be completed before May 1, along with active E&O requirements to avoid delays in renewing business licenses.

Renewals do not include changes

When you renew your license, you are renewing the same license you currently hold. If you need to make changes, such as a name change, agency or sponsor change, you must submit a new application instead of completing the standard renewal.

For more information and answers to frequently asked questions, visit the Annual License Renewal page. If you have additional questions, contact the Licensing team at AIC and include your CIPR number and license number in the subject line.
