Consumer Information

The Insurance Councils operate under delegations from the Minister of Finance and Enterprise for the Province of Alberta. Those delegations set the scope of the Council's authority. Many inquiries received by the Councils relate to a financial concern a consumer may have with their agent, broker or adjuster. The Council conducts investigations to determine that the act and regulations have been adhered to. The Council will attempt to mediate disputes between the parties, however it does not have the jurisdiction to order an agent, broker or adjuster to pay an amount of money.

You can expect the AIC to look into complaints about the conduct of any certificate holder . The specific Councils are authorized to discipline a certificate holder who has been found to have breached the Act or Regulations, but do not have the power to order the payment of a claim or a refund of premiums or service fees.

To initiate a complaint against an agent, broker or adjuster we ask that you do so in writing, this can be by ordinary mail, fax or by email. In your submission please provide a description of the events that have lead up to the concern you wish to raise and what steps you have taken to resolve this matter on your own. If you have any documentation which describes these events please include copies of that material with your complaint. Once received your complaint will be assigned to an investigator who will be in contact with you as required. Be sure to include your contact information with your submission. Please forward your information to the Calgary address of the Alberta Insurance Council as shown on the Home Page of this web site.

The AIC can provide you with the following information:

• Whether an individual or company is authorized to act as insurance agent, broker, or adjuster in Alberta;
• The type of insurance a certificate holder or company is allowed to conduct;
• Whether or not they have been subject to a disciplinary action.
